From Grief to Purpose: Building Hope Through the Len Atkins Project

How the Len Atkins Project Began

In 2020, a small idea among friends and family grew into something larger than anyone imagined. The Len Atkins Project started with one clear goal: to raise money and awareness for colorectal cancer. At first, our vision was modest. We organized a fundraiser in memory of my husband, Len Atkins, to honor his life and legacy while helping others face the same battle.

Growing Into a Movement

As the years passed, the Len Atkins Project evolved. It became more than an event. It became a mission of hope, purpose, and community. Today, our work extends beyond awareness. We proudly support organizations doing vital work in the fight against colorectal cancer.

For example, we partner with Man Up to Cancer, which provides support to men on their cancer journey. We also work with Fight Colorectal Cancer, which funds groundbreaking research focused on prevention, treatment, and the search for a cure.

The Heart of Our Fundraising

At the center of our efforts is the Len Atkins Memorial Golf Tournament. This signature fundraiser brings people together for a day of remembrance, hope, and action. What began as a single event has grown into a platform that amplifies awareness, encourages early screening, and supports patients, families, and caregivers.

Sharing Stories and Lessons

Looking ahead, this blog will be more than updates about the Project. It will also be a place to share personal experiences. I will write about what it was like to raise a child while my husband fought cancer and the lessons I learned along the way.

Caregiving changes you. It teaches patience, resilience, and love on a deeper level than you knew was possible.

Advice for Caregivers

If I could offer one piece of advice to caregivers, it would be this: take care of yourself first so you can take care of others. You cannot pour from an empty cup, and your strength will be needed in ways you cannot yet imagine.

Moving Forward With Purpose

The Len Atkins Project began with loss, but it continues with purpose and hope. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those touched by cancer.

Here’s to the journey ahead.
